Can I upload or record a video using my mobile device?

Yes, you can upload and record media from your mobile device.

What is the maximum (file size) I can upload for a single file and total uploads?

DETI MediaSpace does not have a file size limit; however, due to browser restrictions the largest file that may be uploaded from the desktop is 2GB.

Is there a maximum amount of space that I am allowed to use?

There is not a set number of files or storage space you are limited to in DETI MediaSpace, but we ask that users keep your source file storage to 50GB per staff or faculty member. If you are working on specific projects that might need more storage please let us know.

What file type and quality settings do you recommend?

To achieve the best results from your video upload, we recommend videos to upload be 1280x720 MP4s (using the H.264 codec) at a bit rate of 3000kbps (3Mbps).

What does the error "User does not exist" mean?

If you see an error message that the user does not exist, it could mean one of two things.

  1. If the person has never logged into DETI MediaSpace, you will receive this message. The person must login to DETI MediaSpace at least once, in order for them to have an account in DETI MediaSpace.
  2. The username is incorrect.

Can someone else upload media for me?

It is suggested that you upload your own media; however, users can now change media ownership through MediaSpace. See the 'How to change media ownership' tutorial for more information.

What is clipping?

Clipping allows you to create new entries from existing media. It does not overwrite the original files. You can create clips from your own media and allow other users to clip your media. The clipping tool also allows copies to be made by clipping the entire media entry.

What is trimming?

Trimming allows the media owner to shorten his or her own media by removing content from either end of the video. This works similarly to clipping, but overwrites the original content. Once trimmed, the trimmed content cannot be recovered.

I've uploaded my files to MediaSpace can I delete the originals off my computer?

No. DETI MediaSpace is a system designed for distribution, not for archiving. If you want to ensure that you keep your originals but free up space on your computer, try an external harddrive or your UNG OneDrive account.

I deleted some media from DETI MediaSpace, is there any way to bring it back?

No, there is not a way to retrieve media once it has been deleted from DETI MediaSpace. You will need to re-upload the original file to have the media available in MediaSpace again.

Do I need to publish my media and which publishing location should I choose?

Publishing allow others to view your media items through galleries or channels in DETI MediaSpace. Publishing allows access options beyond private and unlisted.

  • A Channel is a private collection of media where the channel owner can restrict access to the collection from any authenticated user to a specific group of users.
  • A Gallery is a public collection of media. Galleries are public to the world.

What if I publish my media to more than one publishing point?

If media is published to multiple places, the media will have the least restrictive access rights that have been granted to that media. However it is important to note that in this case there will be more than one URL to the media. These URLs are based on the publish point and have the restriction of that publish point. For instance, if a piece of media is published to a gallery and to a private channel, the URL from the channel is still private and will not allow users not authorized in the channel to view the asset, but the URL from the public gallery will still be public.

Why can't I publish to galleries?

For public galleries, only specific people have access to publish to these galleries. These are most likely unit communicators or others with similar responsibilities. If you should have access to publish to a public gallery for your group or unit please contact DETI at deti@ung.edu.

Is the DETI MediaSpace player accessible (508 compliant)?

Yes, all DETI MediaSpace players have the ability to display captions, work with screen readers, and are keyboard control capable. It is important to note that if the video you are trying to view does not have captions or audio descriptions, they will not be available.

What browsers can I use with DETI MediaSpace?

Almost all modern JavaScript enabled browsers are supported for use with DETI MediaSpace. Please see the following table for more information:

Why isn't the view count for my media items increasing?

The view count is only updated once every 24 hours, so you won't see changes immediately. This is the case for any of the analytics available in DETI MediaSpace.

What is the difference between a playlist and a channel?

A playlist is a collection of media that can be shared within a single player outside of DETI MediaSpace. A channel is a collection of media that is shared with specific users on MediaSpace.

What are channel subscriptions?

Users can now subscribe to channels. This allows the channel to appear on the subscribed user’s “My Channels” page under “Channels I am subscribed to”. You will also receive email alerts when new media entries are added to this channel. There is no way for channel owners to view the users who have subscribed to their channel.

What do I do if I find a video to be offensive?

If you see a video hosted on DETI MediaSpace with content that is offensive or otherwise violates the UNG Acceptable Use Policy, please report it here.

Can I download my own media?

Yes. You have two options. If you want to download the original file for a media entry you own, go to the media and select 'Edit' on the 'Actions' dropdown or select the 'Edit' button from your 'My Media' page. On the edit player, you will see a download icon.

I published my media to a private channel and now I can see it on the front page, is it public?

No. Your media has the permissions of where you published it. If you can see your media on the front page in 'Most Recent' or another section, you can see it because you have permission. Other users who have permission to view it will also see it on the front page. Users without permissions to view the media will not even see the thumbnail on the frontpage.

How are files in DETI MediaSpace organized?

Everything in DETI MediaSpace is stored in one large database with lots of metadata. Whoever uploads media into the system is the owner of the media, when using DETI MediaSpace this will appear as your “My Media” section in one large folder sortable by various metadata (tags, keywords, etc).

To publish media for viewing by others, there is a category tree. There are public (galleries) and private (cahnnels) publishing points that fall into this category tree. You can see how this works by drilling down through the “Colleges” heading. Note: channels cannot have subcategories like galleries, channels are single tiered.

What if someone leaves our unit or the university and they own our media?

While end users cannot change ownership themselves, DETI MediaSpace admins can change ownership in these cases as well as extended absences. It is easiest if the individual leaving can contact us, but we know this is not always possible. All you need to do is contact DETI with the situation, the videos to change, and a new owner.

How does DETI MediaSpace work with FERPA?

When students view or upload media related to their classes (academic record), it is the instructor's responsibility to ensure that the students' information will be kept private to that course. MediaSpace however is not only used for academics. Please be aware that when using DETI MediaSpace for non-academic purposes, the owner of the media you view or viewers of media that you have made public or semi-public may be able to see your name and username.

How to tag media for the best results

When you search for media on DETI MediaSpace, the results you get are based primarily on the tags that you input for each of your media items. This is important for when others try to find your media, but also to help you find your own media. When you have less media in your account or don't have any public media, searching may not be a priority. However, as you add more media to your account or generate public content, the searching tools will become more useful.Tags are the number one factor when the "Related Media" section, next to the videos, is generated. The better your media is tagged the more often it will appear to users.

Here are some tips for tagging your media on DETI MediaSpace:

  • You can have as many tags as you want, so don't be afraid to go tag crazy. For each media item you will want to have some general tags along with some that are very specific so that it is easy to find a particular item later on.
  • If the media item is for a course, make the course rubric and number (e.g., 'CS105') one of the tags so that you can easily find all the media in your course with a single search.
